Continuing the Cyclops sculpt

Pushing on with the Cyclops sculpt, receiving lots of positive feedback which is reassuring. Thanks also to Nick Hilligoss for the sculpting/moulding tips (e.g. using cling film to sculpt skin textures).

College Project: Cyclops progress

I have started working on the Plasticine sculpture for the Harryhausen Cyclops stop motion 10" model. Here is my progress shots:

Myself sculpting the model. Shows the scale of the puppet.

 Simple aluminium wire armature.

Tie-down nuts to screw figure to the base.

The figure attached to the base. Milliput epoxy putty was used to secure the nuts to the feet and duct tape to strengthen the wire.

Sculpting started.

 6mm eyeball inserted.

Personal College Project: The Cyclops from "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" (1958)

For my final college project, I have decided to recreate one of Ray Harryhausen's most iconic creations, The Cyclops! The model will be 10" tall, fully articulated with an internal wire armature, and possibly cast in silicone rubber (a first for me!). So far I have done a few scale working drawings and detailed renderings of the creature and armature designs, and also a Plasticine maquette (see below).

Made today, from aluminium wire with epoxy bones.

I finally found the photos! Chuffed to bits!

The original Ornithomimus model from "The Valley Of Gwangi" (1969)

A hard rubber copy of the Minaton from "Sinbad & The Eye Of The Tiger" (1977)

and the original Skeleton as featured in *"The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad" (1958) and "Jason & The Argonauts" (1963).

*Ray reused the skeleton model from 7th Voyage and made another 7 duplicates, so its hard to tell which one was originally in this film.

Getting my "Art Of Ray Harryhausen" book signed by Ray and Tony Dalton (author).

A little video I made which includes some video footage I shot, mind you the video quality isn't the best.

Making the Mould - part 2

Well all I can say is that for my first mould, it went alright, well on one half anyway. I know what I did wrong. The consitensy of the plaster was too thick, therefore it didn't cover the entire space of the box, which is why the second half is all lumpy. Oh well, we learn from our mistakes!

So I thought I would post another update regarding the stop motion puppet. I have started work on the mould 'housing' for which the Plaster of Paris will be poured into. The walls are made from Foam Board and held together with duct tape. For the bed that surrounds the sculpt, I used Newplast Plasticine, which is what I used for the sculpt. To avoid problems I used a different colour and also coated the sculpt in Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) to act as a sealant. That is all for just now. Hope to start adding the PoP tomorrow. Fingers crossed this works out the way I wanted (this is my first attempt at a mould - prob should have tried a test first now that I think of it).

Scottish Heritage Project (College) - Alexander Graham Bell Phone and Terminal

Our recent college project required us to make a prop that would relate to a part of Scotland's history, so I went with the idea of the telephone, which was invented in Scotland by Alexander Graham Bell.

So here it is, from drawings to the finished model!
